Tornado rips through Miss. city, causes major damage

While I'm hesitant to interrupt your eco-evangelical mood with mere facts, February is actually an above average month in frequency of "killer tornadoes". April is considered peak of the season.

The top ten worst tornadoes by casualties all hit before 1955, and have been declining ever since.

You can read up on some academic research on the topic at tornadoproject.com, which covers 1950-1994.

None of this to argue that we shouldn't exercise prudence in our use of technology, but factual accuracy is the first ingredient for good science *and* good government. ;-)
