The passenger of a small plane has died and the pilot was severely injured after the small plane they were in crashed this evening in a Chase Bank branch parking lot in Bolingbrook, officials said.


The incident happened at 5:15 p.m. at 262 S. Weber Road in the Southwest suburb, said Bolingbrook Police Lt. Michael Rompa.


Before the plane came to rest it crashed into a tree, a light pole and then several vehicles near the bank, Rompa said.


The plane is heavily damanged, Rompa said.


The pilot and the passenger in the plane sustained burns, Rompa said.


Officials on the scene said the passenger of the plane had died and the pilot sustained severe burns in the crash, said Bolingbrook Investigations Commander Ken Teppel.


Investigators with the DuPage County Coroner was enroute.


FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said the aircraft was “heavily damaged.’’ The FAA is investigating, she said.


Bolingbrook search and rescue crews remained on the scene as of about 6 p.m.
